The open sores on foot are termed as foot ulcers. These are seen as shallow red craters that usually occur on the skin surface. The open sores could be very deep, sometimes and it could be a crater that extends through the full thickness of the skin.
People with diabetes and poor circulation have more chances to develop foot ulcers. These conditions could cause infections and would be a challenge to heal quickly. There are various surgeries to treat foot ulcers.
Road to surgeries
Depending on the damage and depth of the open sores, doctors would suggest the best treatment or surgery that is required. The different types of treatment available are:
Debridement - this procedure involves treating a wound in the skin. It removes the infected skin and all the unhealthy tissue from the open sores after assessing the extent of soft tissue damage. The doctor uses a surgical blade to remove these and then the wound is washed with a saline solution.
Bone curettage – It is a surgery that involves the removal of the infected area of the bone along with unhealthy tissues.
Amputations - the surgeon will remove a part of the infected foot or removal of toes either completely or partially. For severe conditions, the doctor would recommend amputation as a life-saving procedure.
Vascular surgery - people with diabetes might have poor blood circulation in the legs and feet. This will prevent the wounds from getting the required nutrients and would take more time to heal. Doctors can perform minimally invasive vascular procedure called angioplasty to improve blood flow after doing an angiogram (to know where the blood vessel block is) followed by routine surgery to treat the issue.
Peripheral angioplasty - by inserting a small tube into the artery, the doctor will make a tiny incision in the groin that helps to clear a clogged artery by cutting the waxy substance, which is formed due to the fat in the blood. In severe circumstances, the doctor will perform endovascular surgery or open bypass surgery to allow the blood flow to the foot.
Foot ulcers can be prevented by regular check-ups, early diagnosis, and self-care. At Madurai Foot Care Centre, doctors provide the best and the most appropriate surgery that is required to treat foot ulcers.
